OTLA Announces New VP: Charles Gluckstein
July 22, 2011

The Ontario Trial Lawyers Association recently announced their 2011-2012 Board of Directors elected at the Annual General Meeting. And … CHARLES GLUCKSTEIN, OF GLUCKSTEIN & ASSOCIATES LLP is the new VICE PRESIDENT OF OTLA!

Congratulations to Charles for your years of dedication to OTLA and to the legal community.

Charles has served on many committees, is known for the presentations he gives at seminars, conferences and for the quality time he spends with his clients.

This year is the 20th anniversary year of OTLA. The Ontario Trial Lawyers Association was formed in 1991 by lawyers acting for Plaintiffs. The purpose of OTLA is to promote access to justice for all Ontarians and advocate for the rights of those who have suffered injury and losses as the result of wrongdoing by others. OTLA also advocates for safety initiatives such as Helmets on Kids. To learn more about OTLA, visit their website.

Helmets on Kids
June 2, 2011

Sandev Purewal, a local representative of the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association (OTLA), was at Clark Blvd Public School where he handed out 700 bicycle helmets to students June 1, 2011.

Sandev was accompanied by the sponsors of Helmets on Kids-Peel Region as well as members of the Peel Regional Police,  members of Peel Children’s Safety Village, representatives of  Peel Public Health and and representatives of the Brain Injury Association of Peel and Halton. They have all joined forces to promote helmet safety and brain injury awareness.

Sandev is the current president of BIAPH. Sandev practices personal injury law at the Toronto firm, Gluckstein & Associates LLP.

OTLA’s Helmets on Kids Community Partnerships was started by OTLA members in 2002. Since its first event, held in London, Ontario, more than 12,000 helmets have been distributed to elementary school students.

OTLA members have expanded the Helmets on Kids campaign to other cities and regions across Ontario. This year, OTLA’s HOK events will take place during May and June in Ottawa, Toronto, London, Aurora, Halton Region, Chatham, Peel Region, Quinte Region, Sudbury, Windsor, Brantford, Midland and Simcoe County.

The mandate of OTLA’s HOK program is to put a helmet on the head of every child who needs one, provide education and awareness about bicycle helmet use. The program also includes a presentation and educational material for distribution at local schools.

Cycling-related head injuries in children and youth for 60% of hospitalizations in this age group (according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information).

Facts:

Wearing a bicycle helmet can reduce the risk of a brain injury by up to 88%!

It is the law in Ontario that children under the age of 18 MUST wear a bicycle helmet while riding a bicycle on the road or sidewalks.

Helmets more than 5 years old should be replaced because they lose their protective abilities over time.

You should replace your helmet if it has been in a hard fall or crash or has been dropped of a hard surface, even if there is no visible damage.

Baseball caps, hats, headphones, large hairclips and other such items should not be worn under a bicycle helmet.

Resounding Applause
May 13, 2011

Dear Mr. Gluckstein: During the final portion of the Toronto ABI Conference last November, I took a seat at a table of many survivors, some of whom I've known through BIST (Brain Injury Services Toronto). When the acknowledgements were given to law firms and individuals who supported the event, you received the loudest and most exuberant applause from the survivors, several who remarked, "He's my lawyer!"

Congratulations Mr. Gluckstein — after years of service, you clearly are a man who both prevails in the legal realm and really has a positive personal rapport and connection with your clients in order to receive that level of response.
